35. Did you hear an ambulance go by? Pray.
Why not keep a first aid kit and some bandages in your car—we do. I have a good friend who turned his serious accident into an opportunity to share Christ. He was driving on a country road that was familiar to both the lady who hit him, and himself. She decided to run the stop sign. People might be able to slow down and run the intersection when the corn is not fully grown. The intersection is in the country, so people rarely end at the same intersection at the same time. His full-sized Chevy Truck, extended cab, was totaled, and both he and she were in a water filled ditch. Both got pretty bloodied up.
My friend is an exemplary man, who knows his Bible backwards and frontward, plus he is always ready to share the Gospel. He was upside down, water was running in the windows, and he was finally able to get out. Immediately, he began sharing the Gospel and the lady had absolutely no interest.
He got a new truck out of the deal, but I’m not sure the lady gained anything at all. If people won’t listen, don’t stand, and argue—you are wasting time. Shake the dust off your shoes and head to the next town.
Now let’s apply this to sharing Jesus with someone who just wants to talk philosophy, or psychology, or share why they are an atheist or an agnostic. I had a good, agnostic friend in the Army, who, when I asked, “What is an agnostic?” said, “An agnostic is a person who isn’t sure there is a God but hopes there is one.” A person like this is a candidate for the Gospel.
James 5:13a NIV “13 Is anyone among you in trouble? Let them pray.”
I love apologetics, but more and more I see the limitations of useless chatter.
I have never been in a discussion of apologetics where people move very far away from their philosophy or arguments about Scripture even when they have taken it out of context. The vast majority know they have taken it out of context. Such people want to stay right where they are at in life. From my perspective, I know there are no atheists on crashing airplanes.
I know because I was on a very rough trip one day, and everyone on the airplane had their heads bowed and they were praying …. everyone, but my 11-year-old son! He just kept playing on his Gameboy. No understanding of the details = no fear! You see my point. People often want to draw huge conclusions that will validify how they are currently living their lives.
What should you do? Just keep taking them back to the 10 Commandments. If they refuse to listen, politely move on. Shake the dust off your shoes and move on.
2 Timothy 2:16-17a NIV 16 Avoid godless chatter, because those who indulge in it will become more and more ungodly. 17 Their teaching will spread like gangrene.
Titus 3:9 NIV 9 But avoid foolish controversies and genealogies and arguments and quarrels about the law, because these are unprofitable and useless.
